9 to 5-star review
Thursday night, I went with a bunch of friends to see a preview performance of "9 to 5: The Musical" at the Ahmanson Theater.

So, there have been quite a number of musical recently based on movies...and the ones I've seen I've really liked especially "The Producers" and "Xanadu."
"9 to 5: The Musical" has been one of the most eagerly anticipated ones amongst my friends and me. It just makes sense. It's Dolly Parton, for goodness sake!
Did it live up to my expectations? ABSOLUTELY. It all worked together as I thought it would...in fact, it exceeded my expectations. The stage version is set around the same time the original version was done. In fact, the stage version is VERY faithful to the original. Many of the beloved scenes and characters from the 1980 movie are intact and expanded with musical numbers. Speaking of which, the music is great. My favorite numbers were "The One I Love" (a ballad featuring Judy, Violet, Doralee, Violet's son, and Doralee's husband), "Heart to Hart" (Roz's wonderful number), "One of the Boys" (Judy's number), and "Get Out and Stay Out" (Judy's big Act 2 number). Some people in my group took issue with Violet's ballad in the end "Let Love Grow," saying it was sappy and bland, but I dunno. I dug it. It was cute and at that point in the show, it had earned itself a sappy ballad.
Everybody did a really, really bangup job on this...you also really get your money's worth here. The set and choreography is top notch. ESPECIALLY the set. The way the stage transforms from nothing to an office in a matter of minutes...amazing.
Bottom line...if you love the movie and have a way to get to L.A., go see it!! And...if you can't see it in L.A., go see it on Broadway next spring!
