Weekend wrapup...

Another great weekend...quite a fun close to this month of February...

Friday night, got together with my friends Robb and Jon at Popstarz to see Kimberly Locke perform. She was awesome! It goes without saying that it was much, much better than the Tiffany show I saw a few weeks earlier. In addition to singing great, she really knew how to work the crowd! And thanks to Robb's friend John (whom I met that evening and is quite a cool guy), I was able to meet Kimberly after the show. She's such a sweetheart!

Also, this weekend I spent some time with my great new friends John and Doug whom I met through Ted. Amongst the many cool things they like is game shows. I got a chance to share some of the goodies from my collection with them, some shows I hadn't watched since I initially got them. "Camouflage"....Eeee...that tracing music! Anyhoo, it's always fun to find new classic game show afficionados. :-)

And to cap things off, hung out with a bunch of friends at an Oscar party. Sad to say, I hadn't seen any of the movies nominated for "Best Picture." Quite enjoyed Chris Rock's monologue and the Johnny Carson tribute was cool. Unsurprisingly, I didn't do that great in the Oscar contest. Grrr....And so much Beyonce!

A bit beefed...

So Drew and I went out for a relatively (but not really so) late dinner last night. So we leave around 8:30 to go to Sizzler. Mmm....cheap steak...mmmm...cheesy toast...mmmm...all you can eat shrimp! YAY! We drive through beautiful downtown Burbank and get to the Sizzler on Hollywood Way and Chandler. The parking lot is empty...uh-oh...We look inside and there seems to be barely anybody there...

I look at the sign..."Thursdays - 11:00 AM to 8:30 PM"

8:30 PM!?! What crazy restaurant closes at 8:30 PM...in Los Angeles?!? C'mon! 10 PM, I can understand...9:30, all right....but 8:30 PM!?!

What the hell?!? That's the second time I've been burned by an early Sizzer closing. My friend Tom and I went to dinner there a couple of weeks ago for a 10:00 dinner on a weekend and they were closed too.

Damn you, Sizzler...It's no wonder you had to close all your restaurants down in Florida!

Fortunately, Outback Steakhouse was open, so they reaped the benefits of our patronage...Mmm...bloomin onion.... :-)

Google-y eyed

Wow...I mention the Burger King commercial with Darius Rucker on here and I suddenly get a jump in the number hits on my website. According to my stats generator, a good number of visitors to my site today were people who Googled "Daris Rucker Burger King commerical" or some other permutation of that...Hooray!

Still think the commercial is trippy and creepy... * shudder *

And oooooh...LOST...

King of pain

Just saw the new Burger King commercial for the Chicken Bacon Ranch sandwich...With Darius Rucker of Hootie and Blowfish singing in a cowboy costume and that damn plastic-faced Burger King prancing around. ARRRRGHHHH...Oh, Burger King, why must you continually find ways to creep me out and deprive me of some sound sleep!!!!

Fortunately, this was all balanced out as I caught up on some "Desperate Housewives." As to the recent episode's twist...Wow, wow, wow...I sensed something like that was coming, but I thought it was going to involve another character. Wow...

And this rain...it's getting pretty ridiculous...There's even thunder and lightning...I've NEVER seen anything like this in the 5 1/2 years I've been out here. Just puts a whole damper on the day...ya get all gloomy and worn just by looking ot the window. Grrr....

It's about ______-ing time!

Well, after weeks of delays...I finally have them up...the pictures from my 28th birthday party. Click the "Match Game" logo below to get to the pics:

Thanks to Tony and Jeff for supplying the pics. I was so busy playing host at the party that I didn't get a chance to take too many pics myself.

As you can see, the party was a blast...probably one of the most fun birthday parties I've ever had! I'll say it again...my friends out here are some of the funniest, sharpest, and coolest people I've met...ever! Hope you enjoy the new pics!

A special welcome...

Last night, I got a call from my sister while I'm sludging my way through the 5 to visit a friend in Valencia...she notified me that my mom has discovered the wonders of Google and as a result she's found my webpage. Sooo....

HI, MOM!

* blush *

More later...

Ah what pops in your head....

So, in the middle of snacking on some fish and chips at my desk here at work, a question popped into my head...

Whatever happened to Steve Kmetko?

I know he was let go by E! Entertainment, but the webmeisters of the network haven't gotten the memo.

In fact, I don't think I've seen him on TV in a long while...

Any ideas out there?

Their eyes were watching TV

Well, the 24 semi-finalists of "Idol" have been announced and it looks like I've got a few faves that have made their way through...

"Idol" Semi-Finalists

Care to guess which ones they are?

And speaking of "Idol," Kimberly Locke is performing at Popstarz next week...As my friend Jon pointed out, she's gotta be better than Tiffany. I wonder if her famed roomie will be showing up? Hmmmm... :-)

Watched Jonathan and Victoria on the "Dr. Phil" special. Oy...please go away, just go away from my television set.

And call me cynical, but don't you think there are some ulterior motives behind Corey Feldman's coming out about his experiences with Michael Jackson? And two hours about Jacko on ABC tonight? Martin Bashir is riding this Jacko train for all it's worth...

Got "The Greatest American Hero" DVD set on Tuesday as my birthday gift from Ted. Haven't gotten around to watching a full episode yet, but the video quality is pretty damn good. Much cleaner than any of the reruns I remember seeing years ago...

A good case for the metric system

Went to this site this morning based on an IM from a friend...

Gay-o-Meter

Turns out I'm 40% gay. Or as it said...

"You might act straight mate, but I bet your mother always knew you'd grow up to be a gay guy..."

Oh really? Hmmmm...

What score did YOU get? Click on the comments link to the bottom right and post your results!

A little delay

Eeeks...So here's the deal...I didn't get a chance to take too many pics myself at the party. Fortunately, some friends of mine at the part took some. There were quite a bunch taken and I'm still sorting through them...Nevertheless, they will be up sooner than later...

Been an interesting weekend...or week for that matter. Been trying to get over this small bug I've had since Monday. I think I finally shook it but yesterday was pretty rough. Staying out late Friday night didn't help with that either...was falling asleep early Saturday evening and as a result missed two parties I was supposed to go to. Blarg...

I neglected to mention the newest member of household...A beta fish...or a fighting fish, as it's sometimes called. My friend Jon gave me the fish for my birthday. I've named him (appropriately enough)...Otter. :-)

And showing the faith my friends have, they've already started a death pool as to when the fish's lifeless body will be found floating in its bowl. One week and Otter's still alive. So there! :-P

Had a bunch of friends over tonight for a bad TV night. And three (count 'em, three!) brought over "Pink Slip." For those not in the know, the flim is an instructional video aimed at, um, "challenged" girls. It teaches them how to take care of that special time of the month. And I'll just leave it at that. Needless to say, there was some screaming as we watched it...mostly from me. AHHHHHHHH!

1-up!

Found this link this week while surfing online:

"Don't Toy With Me" : Super Mario Bros Stage Figures

Soooooooo cool!

So I had a contact lens incident last night...Was seeing a show with a bunch of friends and in midst of it, my right contact dried up and start irritating my eye. My eye started tearing up and wouldn't stop through the whole ninety-minute span of the show. I tried rewetting drops, but they didn't work. It started stinging like crazy. I tried blinking and that didn't work. By the time I left the show, my eye was so red it looked like a case of pinkeye...or think the Phantom from the new "Phantom of the Opera" movie without the mask. Ok...I might be exaggerating, but it looked bad enough to get Ted concerned. Fortunately I kept my glasses in my car, so I was able to make the drive back. BLARG...

Friendster is now starting up an instant messaging/chat system. Oh fun...Just what I need...

In one of those fits of reminiscing, I started thinking about the HBO Feature Presentation opening. So I did a search and lo and behold was able to find it online at TV Ark. What a cool opening and what a cool theme song! When I used to do my one-man stand-up/music act, I used to open by doing a cover of the HBO theme. One of these days I'll post video of it online...yeah, right... :-)

Send in the clones...

I'm back everybody! It's been quite week...Most of it was involved prepping for my birthday party last Saturday. This year, marked the return of a theme to my birthday party and this year it was "Match Game!" Though there was interesting wrinkle this year. And no, it wasn't the presence of an actual working Star Wheel...Ted and Jeff concocted a little birthday prank that I would never though of in a million years!

You see...in the original plan for the party, I had asked people to dress up as a B-list (or lower) celebrity. Jeff had told Ted that he was thinking of dressing up as me as I appeared on "Match Game" in 1998. This sparked a light bulb in Ted's brain and the two of them formed the elaborate scheme of having all of my guests come to the part dressed as me, with each representing a different aspect of me. That scheme worked. All but a handful of people who showed up came dressed as me in various forms. For instance, Ted and Larry pilfered some clothes in my closet with Jeopardy-esque T-shirts with answers that had the question "Who is Mandel?" Christie showed up as "Fast Food" Mandel complete with a McDonald's bag in hand. Jon R. dressed up as "Bad Pun" Mandel wearing a "Dell" T-shirt. Jeff came as "Comedy Jail" Mandel wearing an orange penitentiary shirt. Keith showed up as me in a Price is Right T-shirt complete with a bottle of fuzzy navel (one of many favorite girlie drinks of mine) in his hand. And the list goes on and on...

Oh, and we played "Match Game" all night. We went through about eight games and almost everybody played as either a contestant or panelist. Combine that with the open bar, and you can see where the night went. It was one of the most fun nights I've had with my friends. So many funny answers. When I get the nerve to look back at the carnage on tape, I'll put up some of the best answers of the night.

On the downside, nobody seemed to be able to win the Super Match. Two people conked out on the Audienc Match and one person after another couldn't conquer the might head-to-head. Keith and Graham played the final championship match of the night and Keith came out victorious in the final head-to-head.

Needless to say, I was quite happy with how Saturday turned out. It reaffirmed what wonderful, witty, funny friends I have. If you're reading this guys, thank you! Thanks for getting February off to a good start!

There will be pics of the party up here by the end of the week

Rest of the weekend was great...Sunday night, Ted, Larry, Tony, and I discovered a wonderful new restaurant in Toluca Lake. It's called Sebastians. It's located on Riverside near Mardi Gras and Bob's. Good food...good atmosphere...good service. The best part were the gourmet fries. They were a meal in themselves. Chili fries! Parmesan fries! Greek fries! Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...They're just starting out, so if you live in the L.A. area, go visit them. HIGHLY recommend the place for lunch or dinner.

Rock my spot

What a way to finish out my 27th year on this planet. Just got back from seeing Scissor Sisters perform at the Wiltern. As always, a bunch of us went. This time, I went along with Tim, Tony, Keith, Jon, Rachel, Jeff, and Jeff's friend, Michael. And as always, there were some celebs spotted amongst the crowd. This time, it was Kelly Osbourne and Alan Cumming. Tony said he also saw Alexis Arquette. And as always, the show ROCKED. Ana Matronic did not let down with her hilarious banter. And Jake was pure energy even delighting all of us with his views on crevice canyon. Oh, and eye heart Del Marquis. Those quiet ones sneak up on you... :-)

It was the last show of the U.S. tour, and they really ended it with a bang. Here's the song list:

Laura
Lovers in the Backseat (!!)
Better Luck Next Time
The Skins
Tits on the Radio
Magnifique
Rock My Spot
Comfortably Numb (disco balls galore!)
Mary
Filthy/Gorgeous (with a hula hooper!)
Return to Oz
- Encore -
It Can't Come Quickly Enough
Take Me Out (lounge version)
Take Your Mama
Music is the Victim

There were many a special guest onstage. Karis showed his hula hooping prowess during "Filthy/Gorgeous" and "Music is the Victim." And during the final song, we were graced with the presence of drag queen Candy Ass on the stage.

The opening act was Hey, Willpower, a fun group that had dancers, danceres, dancers! I want dancers in my act!
