Burger kingdom!

Random link find of the day...

The Burger Kingdom.

I guess McDonaldland destroyed the Burger Kingdom in the great Burger Revolutionary War of 1979. You remember that one, right? That was the one that ended with the Treaty of Hardee's overseen by the Wendy girl, Colonel Sanders, and Shoney Bear...it was signed at the White Castle, which acted as a sort of Camp David in the fast food world...

My hope is that these characters don't get resurrected as freaky-masked people like the Burger King in that Double Croissan'wich commercial. I'll need therapy if I have to look at a real-life Sir Shake-a-Lot or even worse...a real life Burger Thing.

* shudder *

Mandel is the victim...

Just got home from the Scissor Sisters concert at the Avalon...

It was soooooooooooo good...

Even got to hear a new song ("Forever Right Now") that could possibly be on the next album...

It was sooooooooooo hot....

It was over an hour of pure energy....

Pictures will be posted tomorrow night...

Sooooo tired but soooo pleased...

Ana Matronic ROCKS...

I'm gonna go to bed...

Hello goodbye

Sunday night, a few of us threw a goodbye dinner for my friend Shaun. Shaun's heading back home to Australia this week. :-( Ted made his wonderful Cap'n Crunch chicken and an apple pie. Did a little bit of everything that's been tradition with Shaun and the "TV night bunch"...watched some TV ("Wife Swap" - eee, Caprice...eee, wallabies running around the house!), had a bite to eat, and played a game. We tested out "Outburst! Remix"...think "Outburst using "Pyramid"-ish category titles. The big highlight of the night though was presenting a little goodbye video that a bunch of us put together for Shaun. The idea behind the DVD was to give Shaun a way to have the spirit of "TV night" (affectionately referred to as "G-TV nights" in our household) with him no matter where he is. The main centerpiece of the video was a parody of the "Amazing Race" featuring Ted and Larry, Tim and Tony, Davy and Jim, and Doug and me in the roles of the racers. 'Twas a lot of fun to do and to watch...Had flashbacks to my days doing "TCR," the sketch comedy show for Harvard TV. I just wish it didn't have to be a "goodbye" video...Our final goodbye before he leaves will be tonight. * sigh * I guess one way to look at Shaun's leaving is that it gives me another reason to visit Australia!

On the brighter side of things...A couple of great people this weekend became part of my life. A little backstory first...As you may recall, I've often touted the TV theme/video game music cover band The Hill Valley Preservation Society (who unfortunately happen to be disbanding). I've bounced a few E-mails back and forth with one of the members of the band, and in those coincidences of coincidences, he mentioned his mom and brother are out here L.A. this week. So after a few E-mails and IM exchanges, I got to meet up with them over lunch this weekend. And I have to say that they are the sweetest, most amazing people I've met in a long while. They're very active in fighting for a GREAT cause in Georgia. It's weird how this world works and how people get to meet each other...in this case, it all stemmed from a link to a website on Golden-Road.net, a GREAT "Price is Right" fansite.

Forgive me for getting on a little political soapbox here, but after meeting these wonderful people and seeing what a tight family bond they have, it saddens me that some ignorant people just don't see through the nomenclatures of sexuality...that what some people may see as nontraditional is equated with being a threat to the institution of family. Here is a loving mother and her great son and here she is having to fight for rights that he is entitled to. This is a pretty messed up time we live in. I'm sorry, but the amendment they're lobbying against and similar state amendments around the country are not right...they are contrary to what this country was founded upon. As one co-worker said, with all the war and hatred in the world, how can our government be doing something that's stifling one's expression of love? Though I've only gotten a chance to talk with and get to know them over two days, I feel like I've learned a lot and gained so much from the little time we've spent together. It really drove home what a politically charged year this is, and how REALLY important it is for everybody who has a vote to get out there and vote in November.

OK, I'll go step off my soapbox now and head over to say good bye to a very dear friend...

Something for me to NOT poop on!

HOORAY!

Conan to Take Over 'Tonight' in Five Years

Wow...Good for Conan...been a big fan of his for a while. Here's my prediction...

Letterman will take an earlier exit from late-night and Jon Stewart will take the Letterman's late-night slot on CBS.

An added prediction...Letterman will end in 2007, his 25th year in late night.

Must hold off on "Return of the Jedi" until tomorrow morning. Sorry, Wicket, but I gotta gets my sleep...

Bitch poured beer in my weave!

First of all, "Lost" was superb. Not usually into one-hour dramas, but I'm hooked. I love how it's not clear what exactly is going to transpire in the episodes to come. What is the monster lurking in the island? My guess is that it's a supernatural force. I just hope it's not a dinosaur. Please, don't let it be a dinosaur. And please, don't let it be those skeletal monkeybears that terrorized Brendan Fraser in "The Mummy Returns!" Oh, and the show certainly didn't help with my fear of flying...

Thanks to DirecTiVO I was able to also record "America's Next Top Model." At first, I wasn't quite digging that the first episode was an auditions episode. However, enough cattiness emerged to satisfy my appetite. Girlfight at Barney's Beanery! A legally blind contestant! A bitchy diva who's actually sensitive! A Republican model who wore an American flag as a prom dress! A "plus-size" (their term...not mine) model that makes Dolly Parton look like Twiggy! Jay wearing a jacket with WAY too many pockets! AHHHHH! Overload! Overload! Overload!

Wednesday TV is going to make my TiVo explode...and on top of all this NBC has bumped next week's new episode of "The Apprentice" to Wednesday night. It'll be all right TiVO...you can do it...you can do it...

Oh...coolest part of "America's Next Top Model"...the casting producer who appeared during the reveal of the 20 semi-finalists was somebody I actually worked with on "Greed." Ahh...how small this world can be!

Zapped!

I must be hallucinating...Can somebody please tell me I'm hallucinating after seeing this...

The Last Starfighter, the Musical, Beams Down Into World Premiere in NYC

But alas, no Catherine Mary Stuart from the real movie...I mean, c'mon...didn't they see her musical prowess in "The Apple???"

:-D

Ahhh...what a great end to "The Amazing Race's" fifth season! Such a well-edited, well-produced episode too. Totally reaffirmed why the show deserved its second Emmy over the weekend....

And some things I'll be taking away with me after watching this summer's "Amazing Race"...
  • "Broken" oxen are hella funny
  • "Vertigo" and "scarab" aren't as well-known words as I thought before
  • If you want to defeat a "little person," don't use sides of beef, caviar, or electric fences
  • The international sign for "STOP" is apparently the international sign for YIELD"
  • "The Blue Lagoon" lived on as Brandon dove for the clam last night. :-D
  • Never do the "search and find" Detours when you have a choice...They'll screw you up just like that giant foam PB&J sandwich on the "Double Dare" obstacle course
  • Good karma still reigns in the world!
  • Two-hour episodes move like hell on this show!
I just love this show and I can't wait for the next season...Thank goodness it's being held off until a better time slot than Saturdays is found.

YAY for Chip and Kim! YAY!

Time to make the ice cream...

YAY! You can now get the doughnut ice cream that was featured on The Apprentice last week.

Good news (at least for me)...There's a Ciao Bella in the L.A. area.

Bad news...It looks like they're selling pints for about nine bucks a piece. CRIPES!

What the hell...I'll probably get a pint for Thursday night. Yeah, I'm a sucker for marketing.

So Doug and I had a little debate about the nature of doughnut ice cream. I think you've gotta go with the doughy doughnuts. Doug thinks that doughy doughnuts would get slimy in the ice cream and that you'd have to go for cake. My argument is that with cake doughnuts, you're just making cake ice cream...which Cold Stone Creamery already has. Also, I've never been a fan of cake doughnuts. To me, they're just coffee cakes with hypocinnamonia and a giant hole in their center. Doughy doughnuts are the real deal. They put the DOUGH in DOUGHNUTS.

I rest my case...Rebuttals?

Fire away...

Okay...so apparently last night's "Apprentice" boardroom has sparked a bit of debate amongst "Apprentice" fans. Some people I've talked to have gone as far as to say they'll never watch the show again!

Did I miss something? I mean, yes, Ivana was totally incompetent, but Bradford did a very stupid thing. And lest we forget his behavior in last week's episode when he took a bit of a totalitarian approach to the Mattel task? I don't see what people are seeing when they say that he was a strong competitor and one of the best of the bunch. He showed a lot of arrogance and ego even in last night's episode. He wasn't without fault. He shot himself in the foot...it's as simple as that. He along with a lot of his team last night didn't know when to shut up. That's the one flaw that's common amongst these contestants...they don't know when to shut their yappers. As a result, it cost Bradford...plain and simple. Was there a little producer influence (as said every night in the disclaimer) to keep the catty Ivana and Scary Spice Stacie in the game?...Probably...But even still, there was enough reason to give Bradford the boot.

Now I'll step down from my soapbox...

Thursday, September 16, 2004

Yeah....what he said...

Took Keith's advice and finally watched my ABBA: The Last Video DVD.

OH MY GOODNESS! If you're an ABBA fan and haven't watched this...WATCH IT. SOOOOOO adorable...

And did you all see "Apprentice" tonight? * GASP *

Between tonight's boardroom and "Amazing Race," I'm exhausted. Two of the best episodes of reality TV I've seen in quite sometime.

I may need to start smoking because I need a cigarette after all this!

Figuring out food fads...

Some random thoughts on food that have clogged up my neurons like hardened fatty deposits on a fast-food feaster's arterial walls...

Am I the only person in the world who feels bad for carbs? They've become the pariah of the nutritional world. Nobody wants to deal with them any more. Last Saturday, I grabbed some lunch at Quizno's with my friend Shaun. Ordered one of my usuals there...The smoked turkey sandwich with chips and a drink to make a tasty trio. I had a hankering for some Cool Ranch Doritos. I perused the array of chips and snackies...Cheetos, Nacho Cheese Doritos, Sun Chips, an assortment of Quizno's chips, and there it was...the familiar gold triangle over a sea of blue bag...Cool Ranch Doritos...but wait! There was something different about this bag...It was labeled "Frito-Lay" EDGE. EDGE?!? Upon further inspection, these were LOW-CARB Doritos! I walked down the counter just to make sure I didn't overlook the regular Cool Ranch Doritos section...But you see, there was NO Cool Ranch Dorito section! AAAARRRRGGGHHH! C'mon...that's insane! I understand that some people don't want carbs, but leave something for the handful of carb-lovers left in the world. And what's with the "EDGE" labeling? When I picture Dr. Atkins, the last thing that comes to mind to mind is "edgy."

The other thing is the rise of the chipotle. Grabbed some dinner at the Boston Market this evening and the big new item was chipotle meatloaf (which essentially was a spicier meatloaf). Nothing says traditional New England home cooking than a smoked chile pepper from south of the border. Wendy's had a chicken sandwich with "chipotle mayonnaise." My favorite fast food Mexican restaurant out here is Chipotle. It's Chipotle-mania! Prediction by next year...A Ben and Jerry's flavor called Chipotle Your Love on Me. Swedish lingonberry ice cream with chunks of chipotle peppers in them...they'll be stocking the freezers at Ikea with pints of this spicy, fruity, creamy delicacy. And of course it will be low on carbs...

This and that and this and that...

A melange of random thoughts to close out the weekend...

* Watching the "Back to School" episodes of "Press Your Luck" currently being rerun on GSN. Is it just me or do some of these high schoolers not look like high schoolers? I mean, a lot of these guys look older than most of my friends and me!

* Glad to see "The Apprentice" back in full gear. Rooting for Pamela (who seems to have more balls than any of the men) and Andy (gotta show my Crimson spirit!). Raj and his bowtie and cane bugged me by the end of the first half hour and I'm glad to see Scary Spice is getting work again. :-)

* Caught "Jack and Bobby" on the WB tonight...Methinks I'm going to be catching it again next week.

* In the midst of helping Doug celebrate his birthday today, we went to Amoeba Records. I cannot leave that place without getting something. This time I purchased the "Thrillington" album (an orchestral interpretation of Paul and Linda McCartney's "Ram" album), the "Take Your Mama" single by Scissor Sisters, and ABBA's "The Last Video" on DVD.

* Last night, Doug, his sister, and I saw "Mean Creek." Not the best movie of the summer, but not a bad movie either. We saw a trailer for "Saw" which Doug and his sister are eager to see. I, however, will be finding something else to do when they see it. Eeeek...

* Won a game of "Mario Party" on against Ted, Larry, and Doug over the weekend. Woo-hoo!!!

A Whopper of a freakout

So I'm in Santa Barbara for a work conference and while I'm in my hotel room killing time before dinner, I see a Burger King commercial on the television. It's a new commercial about having breakfast with the king...Yes, THE Burger King. If you haven't seen it, this guy in bed gets served a double Croissan'wich by this guy dressed up as the Burger King...but the Burger King has this plastic burger king face. It ends with the two of them lying in bed next to each other while the guy chomps down on his double Croissan'wich. It's wayyyyyy wayyyyyy wayyyyyy creepy. The plastic Burger King looks soulless and, if I recall correctly, doesn't say a word at all. Apparently, it's an attempt to revive the king and I guess it's their answer to the Jack character from Jack in the Box. But the thing is...Jack looks like a nice guy whom you want to hang out with. New frozen face Burger King looks like he'd devour you and turn you into Whopper meat at the blink of an eye.

I dunno why I had never caught this commercial before. Ted and Tim were referring to it Tuesday night when we got into a whole discussion about fast food mascots. Eventually, we got to the topic of McDonaldland and I came up with a theory as to what the hell Grimace is supposed to be. Here it is...

Grimace is the face you make when you're taking a dump after you just ate a Big Mac. That, my friends, is Grimace.

I honestly loved her!

WOW! WOW! WOW! What an awesome concert...Just got back home from The Greek Theater in RECORD time from an amazing show by Olivia Newton-John.

She was phenomenal! She looked great and her voice was superb. I can't believe that she's 55. The song set was pretty much perfect. She opened with "Have You Ever Been Mellow?" and immediately followed it up with "Xanadu"!!!! She performed all of her big singles including "Heart Attack" and the one I was hoping for..."Make a Move on Me." A big highlight was a nifty bossa-nova rearrangement of "Physical." On top of that, the big surprise for me was when she did a few of her lesser-known singles like "Twist of Fate" and my favorite obscure Olivia single..."The Rumour," the song Elton John and Bernie Taupin wrote for her. Never ever did I think that I would ever hear that song done live in my lifetime!

One of the coolest parts of this show was that she was backed by an orchestra. So, we got to hear all the string and wind parts for songs like "Suddenly" and "I Honestly Love You," which was her final encore.

This was a total 180 from the last experience I had at the Greek when I was trapped in for two hours in a Tori Amos show because I was in stacked parking and I had gone to just see her opening act, Ben Folds. First of all, Ted and I had great seats...Fourth row in the pit!! It was such a happy, pleasant show under the stars of L.A. The stacked parking situation (which I was dreading) was BARELY an issue. We were in and out of there in no time. The concession stand food was even good. We also spotted a celebrity...Michael McDonald from "MADtv" was sitting in the front row not too far from us. All in alll, a wonderful, wonderful "end of summer"/"beginning of fall" show.

Snapped a few blurry pics of the show with my webcam. They were taken in the midst of her performing "Magic" and her country medley...

Last but CERTAINLY not least...I made a fix to an embarassing mistake pointed out by Dougie. The link to his pic on the last section of my bio page was wrong. EEEK! I'm a baaaad baaaad boy...Now, you can see him in all his cuteness. Thanks, sweetie! :-D

I can't wait...I can't waiiiiiiit....

We "officially" unveiled the new living room as we had our first TV night in the new setup. 'Twas Tuesday night...so that meant "Amazing Race." Two of my favorite teams are still in the race! Go Chip and Kim...Go Bowling Moms!

And to my Christmas list, add that giant fun inflatable Zorb balls that the teams had to roll in during the Roadblock. They're like Atlaspheres for people with tender bones! Oh, American Gladiators, how I miss you!

Since "Race" didn't start until ten, we killed time by playing a little "Press Your Luck." I'll still say it...this is a game that has appeal to even the non-game show fans! And even though we weren't playing for real big bucks, it got tense while we were playing it. Mmmm...spin battles at home...There were about eight of us, so we played tourney style. Shaun, Ted, and Davy won their qualifying games and Shaun came out on top after Ted and Davy whammied out in the final match.

Tonight, it's another dose of down when Ted and I head off to the Greek Theater to catch Olivia Newton-John backed by an orchestra. EEEEE! I hope there are some songs from "Xanadu" on the set list. I'll be even more thrilled if she does "Make a Move on Me." I can't wait...I can't waiiiiiit....

With the end of summer...

...comes a new beginning.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the newly expanded Mandelweb.com 2.0!

Over the past few days, I've been chained to my computer toiling over HTML, figuring out templates, and uploading pictures. As a result, this site has almost doubled in size!

If you look in the Photo Album section, you'll see a dozen new sections, each chock full of never-before-seen pics and each with the new photo album format. For you game show fans out there, I've added a few "Behind the Scenes" albums featuring some of the shows I've worked on. By the end of the year, the original photo album pages will take on the look of the new ones.

If you click More About Me on the sidebar, you'll see a brand new bio section. As I often do, I tended to ramble on, so the bio is split up into three pages. O:-)

And finally, the Links page has been updated. If you would like your link up on my site, just drop me an E-mail. By end of year, there will be a new list of game show links added to that page.

And this is just the beginning. There are still a few more photo albums that will be added in the next month or so as well as a totally brand new fan page.

Thanks to all of you who've visited the site in past and who've put up with the drought of new posts earlier in the year . As you've seen, I've been a bit better about updating the blog and I'll continue to update it regularly in the weeks, months, and (knock on wood) years to come.

Enjoy!

Cuchi-cuchi-cuchi...

God bless you VH1 for getting this fall off to a good start!

Why for? Three words: SURREAL LIFE 3

I didn't think it could get any more insane that "Surreal Life 2," but oh, it did...Oh, it did...

Where else can you hear Charo say, "Spooning leads to forking" or "Bridgette Nielsen is a crazy bitch," all in the span of an hour?!? BRILLIANT, I tell you...BRILLIANT! My brain says I shouldn't be watching this, but I can't pull my eyes away. I really, really can't. I'm just itching to see a little smackdown between Charo and Bridgette. It's a pop culture supernova that exploded, splattered, and is now oozing all over my television...

And to top it off, on "Best Summer Ever," they named Charla as the number one reason why this summer was the best summer ever.

I couldn't say have said it any better...

97

That's how many new pics have been added to the photo album. They're from the Mini-Masters mini-golf match we had last weekend.

As you can see, there's a new layout for the photo album in that section. Soon, the rest of the pages in the photo albums section will have that format.

And soon, there will be many more pics...thanks to my webhost's expansion of my site space. Woo-hoo!

Hope you enjoy!

A true LABOR day weekend...

So Ted, Larry, and I have embarked on Living Room 2.0. We're rearranging the living room this weekend and it's turning out to be quite a task...

At the moment, there are piles of books, wires, DVDs, and an assortment of other things strewn around the room. We're essentially rotating the pieces of the living room in a 90 degree angle. One of those pieces is the entertainment center. It's a sea of wires. Seeing how we haven't touched the actual entertainment center in about three years, we covered quite a bit of dust in the process. ** ACHOO **

When all is said and done, we'll have some new carpet, a bunch of new shelves, and a more TV-viewing friendly setup. * fingers crossed *

Last night, Tim helped to organize a get-together at my house to participate in The Great American Shoutout against George W. Bush. We had a handful of people come over. We ended up leaving the front door open during our shoutout. Some of the neighbors across the street wondered what the hell was going on and eventually a few of them start joining in. One of them was a mother who encouraged her son to join in the shoutout. Sure, it wasn't quite "Network," but it was pretty neat.
