Not-so-good Earth

Totally forgot about this incident from a couple of days ago...

Last Sunday morning, Doug and I went out to brunch at The Good Earth in Studio City. It was the first time either of us had been there and the food had a healthy, organic vibe to it.

The decor was a bit plain save for a few tropical trees randomly scattered around the restaurant and a giant half-filled aquarium with fish and more foliage in it. What was missing was the all-imporant cleanliness letter grade. It was nowhere to be found! It wasn't on any of the windows. It wasn't in front of the cashier. It wasn't even on the damn aquarium. Nowhere! I broke my own rule and continued with brunch there.

Perusing the menu, things looked pretty good. Lots of "ten-grain" foods and egg whites. It was time for us to place our order. Doug ordered the harvest pancakes and I told our server that I wanted the French toast. To which she asked, "Have you had the French toast before?" I said, "No." She then said, "Don't order it." I switched to the banana walnut pancakes...And not a single word more about French toast after that.

How weird...How awful could the French toast have been for her to just say "don't order it?" I mean it's French toast! Even the worst French toast I've had has been passable for food. Was the French toast made of French people? Was "French toast" code for something else...like "the chef's mind-altering delight?" Was there some evil hazing ritual involved with the French toast?!? I was intrigued...very intrigued...For a split second, I thought of changing back my order, but I figured could deal with banana pancakes. And alas, they arrived along with some turkey sausage ordered. And they were pretty decent banana pancakes. Slices of banana popped into the pancake batter so they were still intact in the cooked fluffiness of the pancakes. Mmmmm...I'd still take IHOP's pancakes (or French toast for that matter) over what I had that day, but it wasn't awful. It was just unmemorable...

Just hours away from the premiere of Manhunt! YAY!
