"X2" ROCKS. Awesome, awesome movie. Ted, Larry, and I joined up with Mike and Christopher at the Grauman's Chinese theater last night to watch the movie. It was a bit of an adventure. The day ended as a rainy day here in L.A. and seeing movies at the Grauman's often involves waiting outside in a long line before the movie starts. Such was the case the times we saw the Harry Potter movies at the Grauman's. There'd be a line forming as early as a two hours before the movie start!
Seeing how it was raining, Ted and I figure that there wouldn't be a big line so early. Right? Wrong...We get to the Hollywood and Highland complex which lies next door to the theater a little bit after 9. We had tix for the 10:40 PM showing and there's still a bit of rainfall. As we walk towards the theater, we notice a line. We keep following the line to get to the end. It keeps going and going and going and going to the end of the block. Then, the line conitinues around the block and up the next street in front of an apartment complex. CRIKEYS! These fans are dedicated...they probably think that you're not a true mutant unless you stand out in the soggy rain.
Fortunately, Larry has his umbrella, so Ted, Larry, and I huddle under it while we wait and wait and wait. Every few minutes or so, there's this gushing stream of water that oozes from the gutter and runs along the side of the curb. The stream of water is accompanied by a nice pungent mix of the smells of urine and feces. Mmmmm...It's like Old Faithful, but smaller...and nauseating. As the mini-geyser makes its occasional appearance, a chorus of "ugghs" and "boooos" emanates from the line. Larry and I decide to whip out our Gameboy SPs to while away the time. As we do, Ted points out that this screening is turning out to be a "family" screening. More people pass by to increase the length of the line. You'd think there was an American Idol audition happening the next morning. Anyhoo, more of those people turn out to be "family" as well. Go figure!
Eventually, Mike and Christopher arrive and join us in line. Ted hands the umbrella to Mike since he's the tallest of all of us. Not too long after that, we're finally let into the theater and we grab a row of seats.
Lots of big trailers...The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (cool!)...Charlie's Angels 2 (eh)...2 Fast 2 Furious (despite its Paul Walkerness - ugh)...Stuck on You (oh!)...and The Matrix Reloaded (EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!).
But neither measure up to the movie. It was GREAT. I loved the first "X-Men" movie, but this one blew it away. What I loved about "X2" was that it had that "shit hits the fan" feel that "The Empire Strikes Back" (one of my all-time favorite sequels and my favorite "Star Wars" movie) had. And despite never really having read any of the "X-Men" comics, I had a realy good sense of who these characters were. The movie was a little over 130 minutes long, but it didn't feel long at all. There were quite a few twists that I did see coming. And the dialogue wasn't super cheesy either...One the cleverest parts was when Iceman tells his family that he's a mutant. Good good stuff...Oh, there was even a game show reference too. A subtle one...One of the mutant kids at Dr. Xavier's academy was flipping through channels on the TV. You never really saw what he was watching, BUT as he was flipping through the channels, one of the soundbites was the little guitar lick that's heard in the Game Show Network station ID. Granted, I was probably the only one in the theater that caught it, but it was cool. :-)
And speaking of GSN, Ted, Larry, and I walked through Hollywood and Highland to get to the theater. On the way to the theater, we passed by the Cramatorium. And lo and behold, there were people in there! It's quite a cute setup. I had never walked by there when they had "Cram" contestants there. There were four rooms with windows. Very neat...A few of them had put up signs on the windows. A couple of them had signs telling people how long they had been in their rooms. Very neat...
