June 30, 1999

Ten years ago today, a new chapter began in my life. I moved to Los Angeles!

In the days leading up to today, I've reflected back on what's happened in my life over the past ten years and needless to say, a lot has happened.

I initially was supposed to arrive in Los Angeles, June 29th 1999. I had flown out to L.A. from Boston but my flight in Boston was delayed causing me to miss a connecting flight in Denver. I ended up spending the night in Denver learning about the wonders of television in the Mountain time zone...I particularly remember seeing "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" at a weird time slot.

I finally arrived at LAX the next day and it was quite a bumpy first few months. I was living out here in bleak apartment in North Hollywood and went to bed at night sleeping on an air mattress. My first job was as a page at CBS making $8 an hour...sometimes getting barely 20 hours of work a week. I was renting a Mazda 323 that had to have been at least 10 years old. But I soldiered through and around Labor Day of that year, things took a big turn...

That was when Bob Boden (whom I had met the summer before while I was out here on an internship) gave me a call and asked if I could take some time off from my page duties to help out as a production assistant for this game show he was developing at dick clark productions.

This led to me calling up a producer he was working with named Jeff Mirkin. Jeff asked me to come in the day after Labor Day to get started on work on this new project. Long story short...I gave it all I got and this led to Bob and Jeff giving me my first big television gig as a writer on the game show "Greed."

In the quick Reader's Digest version of things, after "Greed" got canceled, Jeff brought me over to Pearson which eventually became FremantleMedia and that led me to meeting David Lyle (the then-president of FremantleMedia). It was a great five years and I got to work with titles like "Whammy!," "Match Game," "Password," "Now You See It," "Card Sharks," and the crown jewel of them all..."The Price is Right." Then, about four years ago, David and Bob (who had by then moved to Fox Reality Channel) called me and asked me if I wanted to come over and join their team as an exec at the new channel. And that, my friends, is where I've been ever since!

There are tons of details I've left out between now and then that I'll reminisce about in a series of blogs over the next several days, but boy...it's been quite the journey so far. There have been a lot of people who have taken chances on me over the past decade and to them, I give a BIG thanks.

When I graduated from college ten years ago, I NEVER thought that I would write for a prime-time network game show, bring back one of my all-time favorite game shows from the 80s, create a game for "The Price is Right," meet many of the celebrities and producers that I admired growing up, launch a cable channel, oversee a five-day-a-week reality newsmagazine show, develop and help create a new awards show, act as a network exec on up to five shows at a time, and (probably most important of all) still have time to make all the wonderful friends I've made throughout the years!

I think this Randy Newman song says it all...

When my friends from high school or college ask me how life's been in L.A., I tell them that it's been a blast. At my recent college reunion, many people told me, "You know...YOU'RE the one that actually knew what he was going to do from day one at college and actually did it!"

And you know what? That's actually quite right, but it doesn't always happen that way. I know I'm an extremely lucky person. And because of this, I'm very grateful for all that has happened and I never take anything for granted!

L.A., you've truly has become home for me...To my friends, colleagues, and mentors...thank you for making this first decade in Los Angeles so wonderful. Here's hoping that the next decade brings just as much (if not more) joy and happiness!

MI on MJ

Geez...it's been a weird week. On one hand...a very successful week at work with a great show wrapping up production...but on the other hand...lots of bad news to digest.

One that totally came out of the blue...Michael Jackson's death...After the shock of hearing that he died, I got to thinking and realized how much he was part of my life.

As a child of the 80s, one couldn't sneeze without hearing Michael Jackson on the radio. I was addicted to MTV very early in the network's run and as a result got really hooked on Michael Jackson's music. I remember being SO mesmerized by the light-up sidewalk that Michael would dance on in the video to "Billie Jean." "Beat It" was one of those brilliant songs that had a hook you couldn't shake out of your head no matter what. And the video for "Thriller..." Heh...I'll confess that the video freaked the hell out of me...to the point where I didn't watch MTV for years.

In the summer of 1983, my family took a road trip from South Florida all the way up to San Francisco. As we traversed thousands of miles, I sat in the back of my parents' green Ford station wagon with my new Walkman listening to a cassette of Michael Jackson's "Thriller." The melodies of "PYT," "Wanna Be Startin' Something," "Human Nature," and "The Girl is Mine" became ingrained in my mind. I don't know that cassette ended up but it got a lot of wear and tear that summer...

As I grew up, I will admit that Michael Jackson became the punchline for a lot of hack jokes I wrote in a brief attempt at stand-up comedy. During the Harvard freshman talent show, a joke I did about his "You Are Not Alone" video gave me a reputation in the first few weeks of freshman year of being "that guy who did the Michael Jackson" joke. Even a few weeks ago at my ten-year reunion, somebody recounted hearing me tell that joke. Go figure...

Then. something interesting happened several years ago...His trio of albums that he did with Quincy Jones were remastered and re-released. Naturally, I bought them and it was then that I re-discovered how great these albums ("Off the Wall," "Thriller," and "Bad") are. It was then that I really looked past all the bizarre tabloid gossip and gained a greater respect for Michael Jackson as this music icon.

This especially happened as I listened to "Thriller" from beginning to end...probably the first time I had done so since that long car trip in the summer of 1983. In a way, it took me back to that simpler time when my biggest worry was if I had enough tokens to play Pac-Man and Dig-Dug at the Chuck E. Cheese.

A month ago, my friend Ken took me to the "American Idol" finale and there was a rumor going around that Michael Jackson was going to make an appearance. Even though it was a rumor, I had that twing of excitement brewing in my stomach...could I actually to finally have a chance to see the King of Pop live?!? Alas, it never happened...and it never will.

Fortunately, we have his music and videos to remember him by...here are a few MJ faves of mine that aren't as well-known as some of the bigger hits...

"We Are Here to Change the World" from "Captain EO," my favorite of the Disney theme park 3D movies

This is the full version of "Smooth Criminal." This always reminds me of the awesome Sega Genesis game "Michael Jackson's Moonwalker."

One of my ALL-TIME favorites..."Can You Feel It," this is the one that should have been a bigger hit than it was originally. I used this song as to warm up the crowds at the college game show I hosted

R.I.P. Michael Jackson, you'll be missed but not forgotten!

LIVEBLOG: Flight to L.A.!

So, I'm on my way back to Los Angeles after a wonderful four-day trip to Boston and Cambridge...It was such a great reunion. Re-connected with some great friends, made a bunch of new ones, had lots of good food...more details to come in a later blog...

But for now, thanks to some in-flight internet, here's the liveblog for the flight back home...

4:37 PM (Pacific) - All checked-in and waiting in the terminal at Logan...

6:30 PM - Now watching the inflight TV...Since there's no CBS feed on the flight, I'll have to get my Tonys fix by watching the finale of "Any Dream Will Do" on BBC America...Ok...yes, it's a bit gay, but given what else is available, this is the best I can do...I ain't paying 8 bucks for a movie...

6:35 PM - It looks like the eliminated Josephs are in pastel T-shirts singing "The Boys Are Back in Town." Lawdy...

6:41 PM - The final two Josephs (both of which are mildly cute) are now duetting by singing "Jesus Christ Superstar." They should just make out on stage...Not quite Adam Lambert and Kris Allen singing "We Are the Champions" together, but again...it's the best I can do...

6:44 PM - Ooh...one of the Josephs sang Queen's "One Vision"...

6:45 PM - Some of these Josephs were cute...I should have watched this show more often...A group sing of "Under Pressure?!?"

6:54 PM - Aww...the dainty Joseph didn't win....Paul Starsky-permed Joseph took home the crown.

6:55 PM - The "People's Joseph?" Really now...

6:57 PM - Now watching Lee, the "People's Joseph," sing "Any Dream Will Do." Getting flashbacks to my high school chorus's Andrew Lloyd Weber medley...

7:01 PM - Oh my...BBC America is now playing "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?" I wonder if I should pay $8 for a movie now...

7:01 PM - OK...the opening sequence of Marias fighting with each other is kinda amazing...fighting musical nuns, woohoo!

7:04 PM - John Barrowman...one of the hottest reality judges...ever...

7:45 PM - OK..."How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?" isn't clicking with me...time to look for something else to watch...

7:47 PM - Over to Comedy Central...OOH, Gary Busey...eww, Larry the Cable Guy...next...

7:48 PM - Here we go...ANTM reruns on Oxygen...FIERCE!

7:50 PM - And Tori and Dean next! YES!

7:52 PM - I'm Facebooking, Twittering, watching Oxygen, doing some catch-up work, and IMing my friend A.J. (who happens to be a few rows behind me)...all on this plane...Too much technology...I LOVE IT!

7:58 PM - Just did the my first video iChat every from a plane seat. :-)

Video chatting with Nick

Currently over Illinois...

8:12 PM - Eeek...Bumpiness!

8:27 PM - Nothing like watching Tori Spelling's dog have diarrhea all over the floor while flying tens of thousands of feet over the country...

8:38 PM - More turbulence...we're apparenlty flying near a thunderstorm...

8:46 PM - Flying over Kansas...and all I see is dust in the in the wind...

9:00 PM - Aww, yeah...Classic "American Gladiators" reruns on the in-flight TV...

9:02 PM - NO ZAP! She's injured?!? BOO! To quote Todd Christensen (he's no Larry Csonka, BTW): "We may think our gladiators our invincible, but they're made of flesh and blood..." Truer words ahve never been spoken...

9:04 PM - I totally forgot that they had a setup for two simultaneous Human Cannonballs after the first season...

9:07 PM - I needs to get my hands on a copy of the original "American Gladiators" theme...one of the best from the 90s...

9:10 PM - I will say this about Todd Christensen...he never had a lack of enthusiasm...

9:11 PM - Boy, that Season 1 eliminator was really janky-looking...

9:12 PM - OK...we get it...you have to be "compact" to do well at the Human Cannonball...

9:13 PM - These jackets that Todd Christensen and Mike Adamle are wearing look pretty ridiculous...it's like they just got back in from a morning jog...

9:18 PM - Powerball time...Just heard Mike Adamle use the term "rimmed out..." I chuckle like a little boy...

9:23 PM - The 2.0 version of Assault reminds me of Tetris...with weapons...

9:31 PM - I never knew that Titan was the "Ayatollah of Smackola"...I wonder who was the "Qaddhafi of the Boff-y"....

9:44 PM - The ESPN Classic feed is going in and out...on to some Youtubing...

Pitfall!

LIVEBLOG: Flight to Boston!

Hey everybody...I'm on my flight to Boston right now...Heading there for my college reunion. And I'm flying on Virgin America. It's my first time doing Virgin (insert joke here) and I'm quite enjoying it...

Best part...Wi-Fi access! Not the fastest, but quite adequate to keep me busy during the flight...which ends in less than three hours.

By chance, my friend Tom Lowe is on the same flight to Boston and we were able to get seats next to each other:

This is us waiting in the food court before we hopped on the plane.

So, I'm pretty impressed by this. I was able to finish up the "I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here!" (so addicted to the show!) episode that I didn't get to complete by logging onto NBC's site. Oh, celebs...PLEASE let Heidi and Spencer back in!!!

Tom has been fiddling around with this Anagramarama game on the in-flight TV set and we're calling shenanigans...It hasn't been accepting words like "reek" or "vain."

Unacceptable according to Anagramarama...BOO!

What kind of English dictionary do you use, Richard Branson?!?

I'm getting a little hungry here as it's pretty much lunch time (west-coast wise)...saw this on the menu:

Hmmm...should I get?

1:30 PM...I got...I ordered the chips, a steak sandwich, a chunky carob bar, and ginger ale for my lunch...review to come shortly!

1:55 PM...Lunch has been served and consumed...Here's the verdict...

The steak sandwich was a cold sandwich with steak pieces (a little wider but as thick as pieces you'd get on a fajita). It was accented with some red peppers, onions, cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, and sprouts all on a pesto-basil spreaded cibatta bun. And for a cold deli sandwich, it wasn't too bad. Above average...it's on the better side of airline food.

Complimented the sandwich with a bag of Hippie Chips (potato crisps with "Haight-Ashbury Jalapeno flavor")...flavorful but not too spicy and not too heavy either.

Washed it down with some Seagram's ginger ale and capped it off with Sweetriot dark chocolate (with crunch cacao pieces). It's like a slightly healthier Chunky bar.

I'd say the meal gets a solid B. Nothing spectacular but enough to satiate the appetite and hold me over until we land...

2:00 PM - Currently above the state of Iowa...

2:01 PM...More words considered unacceptable by Anagramarama...TUSK and TRAM...oy...

3:00 PM...Flight's been uneventful so far. Given up on watching TV through the in-seat sets. The reception keeps going out, but based on what I was able to see, it looks like I wasn't missing much. Been taking advantage of the inseat power outlet for my computer and taking the time to take care of some work so I don't get too behind by the time I come back to L.A.

Also, caught up on some entertainment during the flight...

"Land of the Lost's" Wesley Eure is gay?? - I kinda had a feeling he was when I would watch him on the show "Finders Keepers..."

Kill Bill's Bill Killed? - Gotta give my friend Ted credit for that one...

Whitney's got a new album set for September - Oh, how I was she was still together with Bobby and "Being Bobby Brown" was still on...KISS MY ASS!

3:30 PM - Just over New York...We're getting closer and closer to Boston! This flight is going pretty quickly...

3:40 PM - The descent has started...this might be my last blog before touching down...

Some light to counter the darkness of the H8...

I think we all know where I stand on how things shook out at the California Supreme Court today. Bottom line...let's think ahead and fight the good fight in 2010...this is a change that's going take some time and when you think about it, we are making progress...we're not quite at the end result that should happen, but we're getting there.

In the mean time, check out this music video supporting the cause from Garfunkel and Oates, a duo that I learned about through my friend Drew. His friend Riki (whom you may have seen in "Pushing Daisies" and "The Big Bang Theory" makes up one half of the duo...

Spread the love, people!

M-A-N-D-E-L was on M-M-C...

Sometime around 1989 or 1990, my school's video productions department took a field trip to the Disney-MGM Studios to watch a taping of the new "Mickey Mouse Club." This was around the end of the 1st season or beginning of the 2nd season. No Britney, no Justin, no JC...this was the era of "The Party." Chase, Damon (swoon!), DeeDee, Albert, and the rest of the gang.

This taping was particularly special because it featured the return of some of the Mousketeers from the 50s...Annette, Bobby, and Don were there. Well, I was wondering why it took so long, but I found this episode on Youtube. And sure enough...you can spot me in the audience!

At about 1:44 in, look for the little Filipino kid bouncing up and down...that's me...

I still have distinct memories of that day...Waiting for HOURS in the holding area before the audience coordinators let us in...Witnessing a near riot happen as the mob of kids got restless...Damon nearly plowing all of us down in the audience as he jumped out during the audience warm-up (set to the sounds of The B-52's "Love Shack")...Expressing a little disappointment when they shuffled us out of the studio after only taping a few segments. We basically saw a few throws to some pre-taped numbers and that was it!

I know music rights are probably the main barrier preventing this, but boy, this is one series for which I'd love to see a DVD box set released!

SUNDAY TV NIGHT! - The Amazing Race

Okey-doke...one big reality season finale down, one more to go tonight...Time to move on to "The Amazing Race!"

As much as I love Margie and Luke and want to see them win, I'll be just as happy with a Tammy and Victor win...

8:10...eee...Roasting pigs! Hopefully, nobody swine's about it! ;-)

8:12...Some much needed skin on the "Race." It's been quite lacking this season...

8:13...Go Margie and Luke!!!

8:14...I love how Victor's been so much more supportive of Tammy during these last legs of the "Race." HA to Cara and Jamie!

8:14...Um, is that clue caught in Cara (or is it Jamie's) cootch?

8:19...I love watching Cara and Jamie fail...Schadenfreude!

8:20...Am I the only one who thinks Luke's call for "mama! mama!" adorable?

8:21...Wouldn't it be so appropriate for Mother's Day if Luke and his mom won?

8:23...Oh, Hana!

8:24...Tammy and Victor in last...NO! Not allowed!

8:25...Uh-oh...the dreaded memory challenge!

8:25...Eeek...Luke's doing the Roadblock...I hope he's better at it than he was at the Chekhov challenge!

8:27...Aww, nose flute guy. How I've missed you!

8:28...Luke in his undies! WHOO!

8:28...Cara and Jamie even have bad luck with English-speaking cab drivers...HA! Karma's a bitch, ain't it?

8:30...Oooh..."Up!" "Star Trek's" gonna be a tough summer movie to live up to, but I think "Up" might be "up" for the challenge... ;-)

8:31..."Big Bang Theory"...watch it!

8:31..."Survivor" week is next week...Boo, Coach...Yay, Stephen!

8:33...Calling the police...REALLY?!? Wow, make me dislike you more than I already do, Cara and Jamie! They should join the people who called 911 from the McDonald's drive-thru...

8:34...Wow, Luke is rocking this!!!

8:35...Take off your shorts, Victor!

8:35...Yes! I KNEW there was a reason I liked Tammy!

8:38...Ooh...not looking good for Luke...FOCUS! FOCUS!

8:40...Ok...just anybody but Cara and Jamie...

8:44...One scene in the "Cold Case" promo looks like "Deal or No Deal" with criminals.

8:45...I guess you could say Tammy and Victor are the Kris Allen of "The Amazing Race" for me...I wouldn't mind seeing them win, but they wouldn't be my first choice. :-)

8:45...FOCUS, LUKE! DAMMIT!!!!!!!

8:48...Ok Cara and Jamie, you've redeemed yourself a little bit by helping Margie and Luke...

8:49...Aw, Luke...it's all right!

8:49...Tammy and Victor...good race! So great to see nice guys win again on "The Amazing Race!"

8:51...Cara and Jamie in 2nd...BOO!

8:52...I'm proud of you too, Luke!

8:53...Love how Cara and Jamie got the least applause of all the final three...

8:54...You go, Margie! I gotta say...that is one tough mama.

8:55...To "The Amazing Race" producers...GREAT JOB! One of the best seasons ever! Can't wait for season 15!

SUNDAY TV NIGHT! - Celebrity Apprentice

** WEST COASTERS...CAREFUL...MANY SPOILERS AHEAD!! **

Just waiting for some people to join me before I partake in some "Celebrity Apprentice." Can't wait for the big Annie vs. Joan showdown this evening. Three hours of it?!? Bring it on!

Started up the Celebrity Apprentice...

Ok...the animal analogies in the museum...AMAZING! This is gonna be good...

Trump is walking really slowly and with his cape...he's reminding me of the emperor from "Star Wars."

Trumpy says, "We have two mothers for you tonight..." You're such a card...a TRUMP card...HAHAHAHAHAHAH

Brandon just said that he wants to see Joan Rivers on "Dancing with the Stars." But Brandon, she'll BREAK!

WHORE PIT VIPERS!

Have to say...these live finales with the audience reaction fed into the playback throw me...It's like reality with a laugh track...

WHAT?!? Joan didn't pick Melissa first!

And Dennis and Annie together?!?! Whaaaa?

Oooh...Joan, Herschel, Clint and Melissa vs. Annie, Brandi, Dennis, and Tom! I think Joan might have a chance here...

Why does the Kodak guy get applause?!?

Lots of criteria to judge the final task...We need a graphic with bulletpoints!

Reunion time...odd first group to bring out. Where's Natalie? Khloe? T-Boz?!?

Anybody notice the Kodaks guy's talking point notes on the back of the product's box?

Would love if Brandi and Melissa tweets were called "twats." O:-)

Um...Is Jim Cramer really the person we want to be listening to for analysis given what he's done?

Yay for Trump on prompter!...TeleTrumpter!

I think David the event planner's eyebrows are more trimmed than Joan's...

OMG..."I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!" isn't here soon enough!

Wait...what's this? "The More You Know" as well? How many elements are there to this final task? (And Ivanka handles the TeleTrumpter better than her dad...)

Clay Aiken, Elvis Costello, and Adam Levine in the season finale of 30 Rock? I'm in!

This event planner drama is fantastic...loving this...

I WANT THE BEES FOR SANJAYA!

Oooh...George is still alive and kicking...

Oh geez...Celebrity impersonators?!? I have to say, I wanna know who makes a living as a Barbara Walters impersonator!

Hello, blonde designer's assistant on Annie's team!

For once in my life...I'm actually siding with Tom Green!

AHHHH! Oksana Baiul!!!!

I wanna go to Joan's fundraiser...

Trace and Piers give Joan their endorsement...go, Joan!

Wow, Annie...we're really gonna pull the Joan/designer thing AGAIN?

This final boardroom showdown is AMAZING...LOVE IT!

WHOOOOOOOO! Joan did it!
